SEO vs Google Ads: the difference, which comes first, when you need both
Ilyes Massoudi7 min readThe short answer
Ads (SEM or PPC) buy immediate visibility that you pay for per click and that stops the moment the budget stops; SEO builds visibility that takes months, costs nothing per click, and lasts for years. They are not alternatives but stages: start with ads if your site is new, demand is seasonal, or you want to test queries quickly; start with SEO if you have been paying for ads on the same queries for more than a year. The Gulf businesses that perform best use both: ads to reveal which queries bring demand, SEO to take them for free afterwards.
The wrong question and the right one
“SEO or ads?” assumes they are alternatives. They are not. Ads are rent: you pay monthly and receive visibility, and when you stop paying the visibility stops. SEO is ownership: you pay upfront in time and work, wait months, then own visibility whose clicks you do not pay for.
The right question: at what stage is my business, and which comes first right now?
What each dirham buys
| Google Ads | SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Within hours of launching a campaign | Weeks for technical, months for content |
| Cost | Per click, for as long as you appear | Upfront in time and work, then clicks are free |
| When you stop | Visibility disappears immediately | Continues for months and years with light maintenance |
| Control | Total: the query, the copy, the page, the budget | Partial: Google decides the ranking |
| Trust | The searcher knows it is an ad | An organic result reads as a recommendation |
| Measurement | Precise and immediate | Slower, and needs Search Console |
| Competitive queries in Dubai and Riyadh | Very expensive per click | Hard, but free once you arrive |
| The decision it serves | A quick test, a season, a launch | Building a long-term asset |
When to start with ads
The site is new. SEO needs months, and the business needs demand this month. Ads bridge the gap while organic visibility is built.
Demand is seasonal. Ramadan, the Eids, back to school, summer. Ads switch on and off with the season; SEO does not know seasons.
You want to test queries. Two weeks of ads on twenty queries tell you which bring real demand. It is the cheapest market research possible, and its result is the list of pages to write for SEO afterwards.
A time-limited offer. Ads for the offer, SEO for the category.
When to start with SEO
You have paid for ads on the same queries for more than a year. The clearest signal. A query whose clicks you have paid for every month for two years deserved a page appearing for it free a year and a half ago.
Cost per click is rising. In competitive Dubai and Riyadh sectors, cost per click reaches figures that make one enquiry more expensive than its margin. SEO there is not a luxury but arithmetic.
Demand is informational before purchase. “The difference between”, “how to choose”, “how much does it cost”. An ad on those questions pays for curiosity; the page that answers them builds trust for free.
Your sector is restricted in advertising. Health, law and finance in most Gulf countries. Ads are limited or banned, and organic search is the main channel.
How each feeds the other
The businesses that perform best in the Gulf do not choose; they sequence:
- Ads reveal. The search terms report in Google Ads shows what people actually typed before clicking, in dialect and with misspellings. It is the most accurate Arabic keyword list you can obtain, and it is free with the campaign.
- SEO takes. For every query that brings demand in ads, a page written for it. Months later the page appears organically, and you lower or pause the bid on that query.
- Ads move on. The freed budget goes to new queries to test, and the cycle repeats.
- Both at the top. On queries where you appear organically, keeping a small ad raises total click-through rate and stops a competitor appearing above you.
After a year of that cycle, you pay less for ads and receive more demand, which is the only measure that matters.
The recurring Gulf mistake
Relying on ads alone for years, with a site that appears organically for nothing. I see it in stores, clinics and service companies paying large monthly sums on queries they would have appeared for free with one well-written page. The opposite mistake is rarer: waiting on SEO alone with a new site and no demand for months, when an ad would have brought the first ten customers.
What neither seller tells you
Whoever sells ads does not say the visibility disappears the moment payment stops. Whoever sells SEO does not say the first months may pass with no demand. Both are true, and the solution is not to pick the honest one but to sequence both according to your stage.
What the audit says
The Digital Presence Audit measures all your channels on one basis: demand. It tells you the queries you pay for in ads that could appear organically, the queries you appear for organically and pay for needlessly, and the questions no channel serves. It ends in a plan that says where to pay and where to stop, not a generic recommendation for one of the two.
