Someone searches your company name: what they find, and how to fix it

Ilyes Massoudi8 min read

The short answer

The first Google page for your company name is the highest-converting page you own, because whoever searches it has already heard of you and wants to confirm. It should be entirely yours: your website first, the Google profile with reviews on the side, your accounts, then what others say about you. Online reputation management is not deleting what annoys you; it is filling that page with what you own and control, and replying to what you do not, until the negative result drops to page two over time. Actual removal is possible only for illegal or policy-violating content, and anyone promising to delete anything for a fee is selling an illusion.

The most important page you never look at

Open Google on your phone now and type your company name. What you see is what everyone sees who heard of you from a friend, saw your ad or your account, and decided to check before making contact. This searcher is closer to buying than any other visitor, which is why any fault on this page costs more than any fault on your website.

What the first page should contain

Position What should appear If missing
First result Your site, with a title stating what you offer, and sitelinks to your pages The searcher doubts you are a real business
Side panel The Business Profile: address, hours, reviews, photos It shows a competitor, or nothing
Next results Your official accounts: Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube Impersonating or outdated accounts appear
What others say Reviews, directories, news, articles Or nothing, which is also bad
Ads Nobody above you, or you A competitor takes your customers
People also ask Questions about your business answered by your pages Answers from other people’s sites

How to fill the page with what you own

  1. The same name everywhere. Literally: the site, the Google profile, the accounts, the commercial registration, Maroof. “Al Noor Contracting Est.” in one place and “Al Noor Contracting” in another makes Google see two entities.
  2. Structured data on your site. Organization type with your name, logo, address and account links, on every page. Explained in the structured data article.
  3. A real About page. Name, photo, commercial registration, a two-line story and the address. This page ranks often for name searches.
  4. A complete Business Profile with the same name, the same address and the site link. Details in the Business Profile article.
  5. Accounts in your name on the main platforms even if you rarely use them, to reserve the name and appear instead of an impersonator.
  6. Mentions in industry directories, chambers of commerce and partners with the same name and the site link.

After weeks of consistency Google begins linking the sources, and the knowledge panel appears or strengthens.

What to do about a negative result

A negative review on the Google profile: reply within two days, calmly and with a specific remedy. The reader judges your reply. The method is in the reviews article.

A post in a forum or group: reply there in the company’s name if possible, honestly and without argument, and offer direct contact. A good reply turns the negative result into evidence that you care.

A news article or an old complaint: if the problem was solved, contact the author and ask for an update. And build over it: new content you own, mentions in stronger sources, new reviews. Old results sink as newer and stronger ones rise.

False or defamatory content: that is a legal route followed by a removal request to Google with the ruling. Do not confuse it with the above.

Online reputation management as a service

What serious reputation companies sell is what is in this article: monitoring what appears for your name, building what you own, and replying to what you do not. What the unserious ones sell: guaranteed removal for a fee, bought reviews, or promotional articles on sites nobody reads. Ask before paying: what exactly will you remove and by what mechanism? The honest answer is “we do not remove; we build and reply”.

Monitor your name monthly

  • Search your name on Google from your phone, in Arabic and English, and with common misspellings.
  • Set up Google Alerts for your name.
  • Ask ChatGPT and Gemini: what do you think of this company? The assistant summarises what it reads about you, and you learn what it reads.

Where this sits in the audit

The audit reads what is said about you on pages you do not own, not just the reviews on your profile, checks that the entity’s identity matches between your site, your Google profile, your accounts and your structured data, and measures whether AI names you when asked about you by name and by category. Because the customer searching your name is the customer closest to enquiring.

Common questions

Why does my company not have a knowledge panel on Google?
A knowledge panel appears when Google confirms the entity's identity from several matching sources: your site with Organization structured data, the Business Profile, official accounts, and the same name in the same wording in directories and other pages. A name that differs between sources is the commonest cause I see for its absence. Once it appears you can claim it from Google.
A competitor appears in an ad above my site when people search my name. What can I do?
It is allowed unless they use your registered trademark in their ad text. The practical answer: a small campaign on your own name, which costs very little because your name is cheap for you and expensive for them, so you take the top position. If they use your registered mark in the ad copy, file a trademark complaint with Google with the registration document.
Can a negative article or review about my company be removed from Google?
Google removes from its results content that violates its policies or is illegal under a court ruling, not content you dislike. What actually works: a calm reply where a reply is possible, solving the problem with its author so they update what they wrote, and building stronger content you own that pushes the result down. Any company promising guaranteed removal for a fee is selling what it does not have.
